Pitching Yourself for the Promotion, Refusing to be a Statistic

Pitching Yourself for the Promotion, Refusing to be a Statistic

When the opportunity to present your case to the promotion / hiring committee arrives, your heart starts beating fast…

Because, ever since you were a girl, you knew you wanted to be known for being excellent at what you do.

You want to make your loved ones proud.

You want that seat at the decision-making table.

But almost immediately, your mind races to that one time a higher-up implied you weren’t meeting their expectations…

Or to the list of a few required qualifications you don’t have as much experience with, even though the list of qualifications you do have is as long as your arm.

It makes sense this is happening…

Because after all, you’ve been socialized as a woman, conditioned to second-guess yourself and to believe that you have to do things exactly "right" to be considered good...

Which leads to the Perfectionist Trap and anxiety and dread that come along with it.

That’s partly why, when you go to communicate why you’re the best fit for the leadership position…

  • You waver between hedging, unconsciously preparing for a defensive stance, thinking: "They’ll say I don’t have enough experience in X, and I’ll have to come up with something to prove them wrong…"

  • Or using a passive voice that undersells your capacity to make things happen, because you hope that all the hard work you’ve done in the past would speak for itself. (Work doesn’t speak, as Carla Harris reminds us)

You don’t want to be another statistic, or be fodder for the now-debunked-but-still-too-common myth that women don’t go for jobs (or promotions) unless they’re 100% qualified.

And you don’t have to be.

Making the case for your well-deserved promotion — whether at your current company or elsewhere — can be easier.

  • You could learn to become more effective at helping decision-makers connect the dots between your strengths and big picture goals the organization is endeavoring to achieve.

  • You could build the clarity of knowing WHAT they need to hear and HOW so they feel compelled, bought-in and excited to see you as their peer.

  • You could hone these skills WHILE building more trust with yourself in a way that allows you to show up and speak with more authenticity — which ensures you don’t burn out faking your confidence, as you continue to expand in your income and impact.

This is exactly what 1:1 coaching with me is all about.

P.S. Here are some real-life examples from my 1:1 clients this past week.

Sam stopped worrying that she’s too long-winded and delivered her 15-minute presentation, concisely and with clarity. She’s now moving up in the promotion process with unanimous approval by the committee.

Daphne stopped worrying whether she’d managed enough people in the past and interviewed so well that she secured an executive position at a new organization that will pay 2x her old job.

So if you’re wondering, "Is 1:1 coaching with Jamie going to help me [insert here your unique goal / situation]?’ The answer is, most likely.

The best way to be sure is by scheduling your free 1:1 consultation with me by clicking
