Could Coaching Get You More Money?
I received this delightful and unsolicited shoutout during a webinar I held earlier this year.
Geri, a subscriber and podcast listener, said:
This is the result Geri created after she:
Listened to the salary negotiation advice on Negotiate Your Career Growth podcast
Took action on what most resonated with her, and
Grew her income by negotiating her salary
YEP — all from a podcast and resources I share right on this site at the low, low price of zero human dollars.
Actually, scratch that.
Let’s do the cold, hard hot, easy math together, my friend.
Ask yourself…
What results would you need to create for the coaching to pay for itself?
Of course, one obvious answer is that if your employer paid for the coaching, you wouldn’t need to pay anything out of pocket.
Some of my clients negotiate for executive coaching budget and get it.
For Maria, an operations director at a biotech company, it happened by accident.
She started coaching happily making the monthly installment payments out of her pocket. This was because office drama was impacting her sleep and dimming her sparkly presence, fading her "je ne sais quoi" that had once made her stand out in any company meeting.
More than halfway through our sessions, Maria casually mentioned to her boss that she was working 1:1 with an executive coach (yours truly).
Her boss, the SVP of her department, surprised her by first openly acknowledging that he'd observed a significant improvement in her ability to work with others. Then, he offered her a full reimbursement of coaching fees through the company.
If you're thinking, "Good for her! but I'm on a sabbatical" or "That would never happen with my cold-hearted boss at my toxic workplace"...
Then what if, as a result of coaching, you negotiated a 10 - 20% increase in salary wherever you landed next? (Yes, I'm being super conservative here on purpose. 10-20% increase when you change jobs is an average bump.)
But seriously.
What difference would that make to your future earning potential?
To the home renovation you'd been Pinterest-day-dreaming about?
To the kinds of sun-and-fun-drenched vacations you'd get to take with your beloved (animal or human)?
To the kinds of donations you'd get to make wholeheartedly and easily to the humanitarian causes you deeply care about?
And what would it be worth in the long run to have the mindset and strategies of confident self-advocacy become second nature to you?
The money stuff isn't theoretical.
Sheila -- an oncology doctor -- improved her job offer by five figures within a month of coaching, more than doubling her coaching investment.
Amira -- a compliance officer -- secured her dream job with a $50K pay increase within 5 months of coaching, more than 7X ROI.
Emily -- a marketing VP -- just celebrated her $17K pay increase with me last week, in her 4th week of coaching.
Beyond money, here are three kickers to the career growth my clients generate:
95% of clients report feeling calmer, more grounded, and clearer about how to advocate and move forward in their careers within the first three sessions
They increasingly approach career challenges from a place of strength, because they have the brain and nervous system capacity to bounce back from setbacks, instead of spinning out or getting stuck in freeze, flight, or fight mode
Which all contributes to the capacity to lead, manage, negotiate, and influence people up, down, and across the org with LESS overthinking and MORE coherent, confident communication plans
